Our impact

Port of Miami Tunnel, Florida, USA

A Major road tunnel under the Port of Miami feeding one of the largest cruise port terminal and relieving the city center road network. In operation since 2014.

Background

Construction of the Port of Miami Tunnel Project has provided a direct high capacity road link between the Miami seaport and Florida’s arterial highway network. The new infrastructure connection immediately diverted around 16,000 vehicles of daily traffic, much of it heavy trucks, from downtown Miami, reducing congestion, improving quality of life and aiding future development in the area.

Simultaneously, the twin-tunnel and highway improvement has boosted the operations and competitiveness of the Port of Miami. In 2014, following completion of construction of the tunnel, Meridiam and Bouygues Construction signed a SPA under which Meridiam acquired Bouygues Construction’s stake (6.6%) in the Project Company.

ESG/SDG Key Facts

The Project features flood gates that protect the tunnel against flooding which mitigates risks related to sea level rise and climate change.
It is estimated that 80% of the cargo traffic travelling in and out of the Port of Miami is using the tunnel, thereby avoiding the downtown areas and noticeably increasing quality of life for residents, while decreasing carbon emissions from congestion and idle time on city streets.

The Project is involved with Port of Miami and Miami-Dade County’s #Resilient305 strategy with the launch of COOL (CO2
Lowering) to reduce CO2 emissions at the port from all partners. The Project Company staff is frequently hosting community groups on tours of the tunnel including officials from the Client, Port County, State, elected officials, and the Federal government (FHWA). The Company staff also partners with local schools (elementary, high schools, and universities) to bring STEM education and awareness to the students through shadow programs, summer internships, tours, presentations, and mentoring programs. In Q3 2024, CEO Wendy Conforme was elected to the Board of Directors of the Florida Engineering Society. In this capacity, Wendy Conforme will continue working in the area of STEM across high schools and universities in the Miami area.

In Q2 2024, in accordance with Meridiam’s mission strategy, the Project Company supported Habitat for Humanity of Greater
Miami’s efforts to build affordable housing for low-income single mothers in Miami-Dade County, in alignment with SDG 5 and
SDG 11. The Project Company also supported The Underline, Miami’s first linear park, currently in its third phase of
construction, in alignment with SDG 9 and 11.
In Q3 2024, the Project Company partnered with Florida International University for the third year to host a cohort of
international executive MBA candidates as part of the International EMBA Consortium.

SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy)

The Project Company finished implementing LED lighting to reduce its energy consumption in 2021. The Project Company is
continuing to explore solutions to decrease its energy consumption and increase the mix of renewable energy in its power supply. A case study regarding energy reduction will be prepared before the end of 2024.

SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, Infrastructure)

The O&M Contractor for the Project intends to adopt a new voluntary certification related to environmental systems (ISO) in the coming years.

SDG 13 (Climate Action)

As part of the commitments on decarbonisation by the O&M contractor, an EV charger was installed in August 2024 at the Maintenance Vehicle Facility. Two of the twelve vehicles in the fleet will be transitioned to EV, accounting for 17% of the fleet, with plans for future expansion of the electric fleet. The first of the two EV’s has also been delivered to the asset as of August 2024.

The Project Company participates in Meridiam’s Asset Decarbonisation Initiative. This initiative aims to support assets in their decarbonisation journey by providing effective and detailed decarbonisation plans with bottom-up trajectory by asset and at the portfolio level. Currently in Phase 2, the Project Company has completed the data collection for the 2019 and 2023 carbon emission baselines.
